"To the grocery we will go. My silver ball and me."
The funniest part of this challenge was taking the pictures and not necessarily the pictures themselves. It was so embarrassing to be out with this big silver ball in the grocery setting up shots. People were definitely wondering what the heck I was doing. The looks I got from people were interesting to say the least (the kids were the worst). I tried to be as inconspicuous as possible and take my photos quick. It was also pretty busy so I was worried as always of being a courteous shopper and staying out of people's way. However, what a fun challenge and exercise on getting out of your comfort zone. Hope you enjoy these pics. They are pretty self explanatory. Just the silver ball and I documenting our amazing debut at the grocery! Oh the fun we had! :)

Hey all. I wanted to share some feedback on these photos. I showed them to a friend of mine (a very clever creative) and I thought his feedback was awesome. He said that he felt like he was in a giant game of pinball! I loved this so much and thought that it was so creative and inspiring and a totally playful way of looking at them. I only wish I had thought of it myself! LOL. He nailed the feeling of the series right on the head. Now when I look at them I can't help but think that. Thanks Nick for the awesome feedback and the extremely creative way of looking at the world. We were talking last night about how everyone feeds off each other creatively. I am thinking this morning how amazing that is that we can all inspire each other one way or another with fresh perspectives on life!!! I am definitely munching away. :)
ReplyDeleteFirst photo - love the "safety first" theme I get from it ;) Great tones of silver and gray and I also enjoy the little splashes of color with the seatbelt and reflection. What could also be fun, is taking a pic of the ball in a shopping cart in the part where small children or purses usually sit! Although I'm not sure you'd ever go back to a grocery store armed with the silver ball and camera, huh? ;)
ReplyDelete2nd pic - vibrant colors! and the reflection really adds some depth and context - I especically like the typical supermarket sign hanging above you in the reflection. :) There's also a wonderful sense of orderliness with the rows of veggies.
Last one - I get a "bowling" vibe from this. The angle is great and I like the lines in this photo as well.
Well done on these - very amusing indeed! I really enjoy the rich, vibrant colors of your photographs in general.
i'm always a little envious of people who feel comfortable enough taking stuff like a camera and props into a grocery store- great series, Erin!
ReplyDelete1. of the three, this one is my least favorite, but it's still really good- I think it's different in that it's being restrained, and the ball is also cropped- but overall, it's a nicely set image- I like the angles created by the seatbelt and the seams in the passenger seat.
2. My FAVORITE- I love that the silver ball is trying to be a cabbage... and it's SO close- the reflections in this are fantastic- and I like that it's with other circular objects, trying to blend in. Oh, and the colors are awesome. ;)
3. Cool angle- I've always enjoyed one point perspective in photographs- the way the lines go way back into the photograph.
Overall, great placement of the main object- i especially enjoyed trying to find you in it's reflection!
These are great! I like how the first one has very clean lines and not a whole lot going on. ANd it has kind of a silly aspect to it--strapping a ball into a seat belt?? (but also very practical--you wouldnt' want that ball rolling around while you're driving)
ReplyDeleteThe second is my favorite. In contrast to the first, it has a lot going on, and I really had to look at it to se where the ball ends and where the produce begins. At first I thought the reflections of the cabbage in the ball were Brussel Sprouts!
The ball looks a bit lonely in the third photo, since there is nobody else in the aisle. LIke it is grocery shopping by itself. Nice angles.
The first one, I love, but I don't know why. I think that having it in a seat belt personifies it, which is very difficult for a silver ball.
ReplyDeleteThe second one is great, but I wish it were surrounded by more of a variety of colors instead of just green w/ some purple off to the side.
The third one is MESMERIZING! I can't stop looking at it! I love the lines, angles, and repetition. It makes me VERY happy! Nicely done!
Ug, I can't believe I'm getting to the comments so late! It's been a busy time for us....sorry for the delay... I may not comment right away, but be assured, I will get to it eventually!
ReplyDeleteWhat a very fun "silver ball". Where does one find an object like this I wonder!?! Is it one of the garden balls?
These photos have a bit of a surreal quality to them...not so much bizarre but rather a bit fantastical.
The one thing I miss in these photos is the technique you used in the last set you took of the trees. To me the seat belt photo is a bit out of place because it's much more close up then the other two. You have one photo with an object and a seat and then you have two photos with a lot of little things all over...The tree photos worked so well together because you implemented a progression of size in the three. But that's not to say that the seat belt photo isn't a great image, for it is! I really love how the diagonal movement and the angles of the seat contrast so nicely with the roundness of the ball.
The colours in the second photo are just stunning...It's amazing how the ball almost blends into it surrounding! I'm a little unsettled by the fact that the ball is almost in the center of the image, but at the same time the diagonal lines of the shelves sort of counter balance the ball...
What a super fun image the third one is! All those soft drinks... I love love love the perspective and the movement in this image. You truly were a brave soul with this challenge Erin! I have a really really hard time taking my camera into public places, I'm so afraid of getting kicked out! but really if you don't take risks then you won't get fantastic images! I'm glad you were brave, these are fun and refreshing. I must also note that I had a good time playing, "where's Erin?"
:)
