Weekly Photography Challenge (old fashioned)

Challenge Brief:

"Old Fashioned"

The Rules:

1. You are free to submit as many or as few photos as you'd like.

2. Pictures can be in b/w or colour

3. Mcklinky will stay open for the next two weeks if you don't get to it this week it's okay if you submit next week instead.

"Bit of Belgian ALE"

We had this stashed away for a special occasion and we didn't need much to convince us it was. Just the weekly photo challenge and a regular old friday night. ;) I loved this bottle and thought it looked old fashioned and pretty special too. I decided to try some new technical things this week and though I stumbled and fumbled around in PS and with files, with a little help I was ultimately able to achieve what I wanted and learned a ton....soooo YEAH FOR PROGRESS!!! Doesn't this look delicious? ...sorry there isn't any left for you, but I hope you like looking at it anyway. :)

  1. Erin! Welcome back! I was beginning to wonder if people gave up on the Photo Challenge...no matter though. I really started it so that I'd challenge myself, but it's very nice to have company!

The small version of these two pictures doesn't do them justice. I was so thrilled to see all the textures and details in the two shots when I enlarged the image. I almost wish you had three pictures..not sure why though. The picture of the bottle is stunning. I love your use of natural light, as well as the sense that the bottle is very cold.

Those bubbles on the glass are so beautiful! It's key in a picture like this to start with a clean glass, and you did just that. I also really enjoy the warm colours in these images. It makes them seem all that more appealing. Did you use natural light in the pic of the glass? It would appear so since the colours match in the two pictures.

Kuddos on messing around in PS. I took some pictures today on my way back from Watertown and hope to fiddle around in PS with the image. I have an idea of what I want but am not sure if I can do it. HOpefully by tomorrow my entry will be up.

  2. Hey! I haven't given up on WPC...it just doesn't work out every week for me to participate. However, I do wish more people were still involved as I have learned a lot from others I think.

Yeah I agree about the size....in fact if I had my way this blog and the way the pictures were presented would be a lot different. I am thinking about switching to a different blog host soon too, so that I can get what I want. I liked this one larger as well just couldn't work out how to post it that way on blogger. Like I said before im technically challenged, im learning, but slow. lol

Onto the pictures themselves. Yes I used natural light coming in around my kitchen table on the south side of my house towards the end of the afternoon......our home gets lovely light in the afternoon in all the main living areas....one of my fav times of day in these rooms.

You actually hit on all the things I was trying to achieve, I wanted a warm look cuz I felt it suited the subject matter and made the whole project feel more old fashioned.....im not sure why i thought this...but for some reason in my mind the warmer light to me seemed old fashioned and cozy. I also used the thick butcher block as sort of an anchor for the still life, cuz it was simple yet interesting and had the used warmth I needed to convey the idea. I intentionally wanted to portray the cold bottle AND I did consciously make sure the glass was super clean and shiney before starting. I only use natural light cuz that is all I know how to use or have gear for really.

Thanks for the props on working in PS. I won't lie when I say it is confusing to me.....with absolutely no experience or formal training google is my best friend and THIS time I was able to achieve really accurately what was in my head to begin with. :)

I can not wait to see what you produce. Im looking forward to it. good luck with PS and I hope that you will be able to achieve what you want.

ps. interesting. I was originally going to post a group of three.....but out of the shots I took I didn't like the way any of them worked with these two...so I made a judgement call and didn't post just to post. If i took more time and did the challenge again I would probably try to get that third shot to accompany them. But not this time.

  3. Sorry for not commenting as often lately, I am trying to get back in touch with the WPC. This is a very old-fashioned-looking picture, and definitely looks tasty. Though merely sight does not quench as well as drinking it I'm sure. I love your work pretty much every time, so I hope you are able to continue to regularly be a part of this!
